Why I Need a Mobility Dog
The biggest challenge I face every day is my balance.
Most of the time (not all the time! 😊), I do fairly well while I’m walking. Ironically, it’s standing still that is the most difficult—and often the most dangerous. Uneven surfaces, like grass or gravel, make it even harder. When I’m standing, I almost always need something to lean against or hold onto to keep my balance. Standing still also causes my back pain to become much worse.
This is where Tank will make such a difference.
As he grows and completes his mobility service dog training, Tank will be taught to provide stability by standing in a braced position so I can safely lean on him when I’m standing. His support will help reduce my risk of falling and give me greater confidence to stay active and independent.
If I do fall, Tank will also be trained to help me get back up safely. In addition, he will learn to pick up dropped items for me.
That task is important for two reasons. First, bending over can easily cause me to lose my balance and fall. Second, as my CMT progresses, my hand strength and grip continue to weaken, making it increasingly difficult to pick up and hold everyday objects.
Tank isn’t just a companion—he represents independence, safety, and the ability to continue doing the things I love for as long as possible.
